Given the outcomes of COP17, funding mechanisms under the UNFCCC, in particular the Green Climate Fund and its operations, form a key part of Fairtrade’s advocacy work in 2012.
We would urge decision makers to ensure that:
- Developed countries must pledge and meet contributions as agreed during COP16 to facilitate adaptation and mitigation by small scale farmers.

During COP17, which I attended as Chairman of Fairtrade Africa, I was told that a Green Climate Fund would help poorer nations green their economies and adapt to more chaotic weather. Farmers across Africa would be able to get access to new resources. I would like to urge policymakers to ensure the fund is up and running as soon as possible as realities on the ground are becoming increasingly dire.
